SURPASS Program Logo

Application Period: February 1 - March 15 Annually



The SURPASS Program supports highly motivated faculty-student teams for 10 weeks of multidisciplinary, hands-on research. Each team prepares a project proposal packet that includes a project description and mentoring plan. SURPASS students will also receive professional development through workshops and social/cultural activities. The aim of the program is to encourage students to gain valuable professional skills through immersion in research projects and cultural exchange, enabling them to acquire a deeper understanding of our global connectedness.


The SURPASS program is funded by the UTEP Office of the Provost.

Summer 2017 acceptance is contingent upon funding.


All UTEP undergraduate students, regardless of citizenship status are eligible to apply.

To qualify, students must

  • Be in good academic standing (3.0 Overall GPA)
  • Have identified a faculty research mentor to prepare a project proposal as a team (see guidelines link below)
  • Enroll for 3 semester credit hours for any summer session (Summer, Summer 1, or Summer 2) no later than April 25th
  • Enroll in RSRC 4033
  • Must not have another UTEP Job for the duration of the program

Students will receive an hourly rate of $10 per hour for 20 hours per week over the course of the program (200 hours total).

All student awardees will have to commit to certain requirements including, but not limited to:

  • Sign a letter of commitment in collaboration with the research mentor 
  • Attend the COURI Workshop Series
  • Submit an abstract for the COURI Summer Symposium
  • Present a poster at the COURI Summer Symposium
  • Complete an end of program online survey
